Irene Ware hails from Pelham Bay, N.Y. – near New York City. An aunt sent one of her photographs to a New York paper that was searching for a girl to represent Manhattan in the international beauty contest in Galveston, Tex., in 1929. She was chosen as “Miss America.” And later won fame of other sorts.”Chicago Tribune, Sept. 30, 1934
