Image is a gag photo taken shortly after Buster Keaton signed a contract joining MGM studio’s roster of stars. Lon Chaney was already one of its reigning stars!
The studio promoted Chaney as “The Man with a Thousand Faces” because of the star’s ability to craft different film (often grotesque) characters through his use of makeup. Chaney also twisted his body into occasionally deformed personalities. Keaton, by contrast, had only one face: his trademark unsmiling stone face. Both, however, were masters of mime, able to convey emotions through body language.
The image was likely taken in 1929 before Chaney’s untimely death. Keaton’s success at MGM was also short-lived but for different reasons. Unable to cope with the studio’s way of making films, the studio’s master comic slid into alcoholism in the early 1930s.
