Ever seen “Despair” by Craig Owens? Have you ever heard of the Banning House Lodge?
Do you love photos that tell a story? Especially a ghost story? And do you love to visit haunted places? Are you a fan of Owens’ photography and his true history meets true haunting approach to storytelling?
About the Photo:
Owens snapped this photo at the Banning House Lodge, located at Two Harbors on Santa Catalina Island. He named it “Despair” and the characters are loosely based on the relationship struggles within the Banning family, who owned the island until 1919. Part of the family stayed at the house when visiting the island.
Although over a hundred years have passed since then, folks still say that the Banning House Lodge is haunted. Yet few people bothered to investigate there, that is, until Owens and his crew arrived. You can read about what happened in his book HAUNTED BY HISTORY VOL. 1: SEPARATING THE FACTS AND LEGENDS OF EIGHT HISTORIC HOTELS AND INNS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
Why did Owens stage elaborate photos in haunted hotels? Simple. He feels that renting an entire location for three-four days to conduct a multi day photo shoot/paranormal investigation is the best way to test haunted claims.
So did he and his crew encounter any ghosts at the Banning House Lodge? Maybe. Maybe not. All the info is in the book…plus a recap of documented deaths on that part of the island as well as the Banning House Lodge’s surprisingly rich Old Hollywood history.
As for the “Despair” by Craig Owens photo, its beauty and romanticism stands out on its own. It will make a wonderful gift for your ghostly friends or yourself.
