This beautifully restored Dracula poster image comes from the 1931 pre-code horror film that made Bela Lugosi a star. Directed by Tod Browning, the film is based on the 1924 Broadway stage play of the same name, written by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston. The play, of course, is adapted from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. Believe it or not, Lugosi starred in the Broadway stage hit as well.
Lugosi plays Count Dracula, a handsome yet mysterious vampire who emigrates from Transylvania to England to make new friends before killing them.
Dracula became a commercial and critical success and led to several sequels, spin-offs, and remakes. But none of these films ever captured the excitement nor stirred the hearts of audiences like the 1931 version. This was primarily due to Lugosi, who turned Stoker’s literary character into a cultural icon. Even today, his romantic yet sinister interpretation of Stoker’s vampire still sets the standard against which all vampires are judged.
