If you love tiki or exotic designs then you are going to love, love, LOVE this Aztec Hotel Mug with Color Inside. It faithfully replicates an actual wall mural in the hotel lobby.
The Aztec Hotel in Monrovia, CA, opened in 1925. Although it was named the Aztec, it actually offered a whimsical example of Mayan Revival Architecture.
The hotel’s architect was Robert Stacy-Judd, who felt that “Aztec” had a more commercial appeal to U.S. tourists driving through Southern California.
Stacy-Judd’s designs are whimsical and based on books he had purchased. At that time, he had never actually seen real Mayan or Aztec ruins. Nevertheless, he decided to make a name for himself as a Mayan Revival expert. The hotel and its eccentric design still remain his most famous building. It also happens to be a national landmark, waiting to reopen for the public.
Today, the Aztec Hotel still remains one of the last great original roadway stops along the old Route 66. Not only is it kitschy-cool but it is also haunted by ghosts as well. The building’s real history, however, is still an enigma with its lurid tales of a Prohibition speakeasy, a brothel, and illegal gambling.
You’ll love this unique mug. When you happen to be in Monrovia, maybe you can see the mural for yourself! Better yet come to one of our tours once they resume again and learn the real history behind the hotel.
